The victory of the popular Sandinista revolution in Nicaragua marked a major defeat of North American imperialism in Latin America. It was a defeat of a principled, strategic nature. The people of our country have won their just struggle six years after the overthrow of the Government of National Unity in Chile and the establishment of the fascist dictatorship there. The revolution in Nicaragua has shown that imperialism is unable to suppress the resistance it faces on the Latin American continent. From the point of view of the reactionary tasks of the imperialist geopolitics of the United States, Nicaragua was a country on which they made a serious bet. The geographical location of our country, in principle, allows us to build another transoceanic canal, we have large and diverse natural resources. Taking into account such factors, the United States, until the last moment, tried to save the Somoza dictatorship, which was collapsing under the onslaught of the revolutionary Sandinista movement, which was a convenient tool for them to pursue an imperialist policy. But all their attempts failed!


On the other hand, the Nicaraguan revolution represents an extremely important historical result, since it, following the revolution in Cuba, once again proved the possibility of the victory of the popular, anti-imperialist revolution in Latin America, in the immediate vicinity of the United States. The actions of the United States in relation to Cuba and Nicaragua provide a concentrated expression of the imperialist policy of this country, which it constantly pursues in Latin America. Now I am referring to such elements as the organization of the economic blockade of Cuba, the support of the Cuban counterrevolutionaries, military blackmail, attempts to intimidate the Cuban people, the desire to exploit the discontent of the Nicaraguan bourgeoisie with the victory of the popular revolution, to force it to oppose the democratic, progressive policies of the Sandinista movement. At the same time, the United States is betting on some left-wing extremist groups in our country, on the remnants of the Socialist guard, now entrenched in Honduras and El Salvador. It is possible that, relying on these counterrevolutionary forces, the United States may launch an invasion of our territory. At the same time, the United States wants to win over world public opinion. So, after the recent visit of the government delegation of Nicaragua to the USSR, the organs of imperialist propaganda launched a dirty campaign of lies and slander, claiming that our people are living and building a new life "at the behest of Moscow." But lies, as you know, have short legs... The revolutionary transformations in our country are the result of the free expression of the will of the Nicaraguan people. And we in Nicaragua know very well who is actually our friend and who is our enemy.


This is the context in which the Nicaraguan national cinema was born, amid increasing international tension, the intensification of imperialist forces, the deepening of revolutionary processes in Latin America and the strengthening of the position of world socialism. It was born on the front line, in the fire of the armed revolutionary struggle, at the moment when the ideas of the Sandinista movement began to be realized, and this process had to be accelerated by all possible means.
